A classic cottage garden flower. Large pure-white bellflowers on tall stems which don't require staking.
Introduced from Southern Europe in 1596. Cottagers used to distil a water from the leaves and roots, which was used as a cure for sore throats. The roots were also eaten as a vegetable.
Campanulas are an invaluable addition to a cottage garden or informal border.
