This lovely plant of wet meadows and water margins will actually grow in most situations, provided the soil does not stay bone-dry for too long. Each stem has several 2" white flowers, above large glossy round leaves.
Can be grown in shallow water round the edge of a pond. It also makes a good bog garden plant, and grows well in borders.
Caltha Palustris has been known to have been growing in Britain since before the Ice Age and, in more recent times, it was traditionally hung on doors to ward off lightning and witches. In 2025 it was added to the GB Red List for Vascular Plants due to its scarcity in the wild.
