Proceed To CheckoutYour in-the-green bulbs may have small shoots, full leaves, flower buds, open flowers, foliage going over, or any combination of these states. In other words you may receive them in any of their natural conditions, from first shoots to dying or dead foliage (note that Anemone rhizomes may not yet be shooting). They can all be planted in any of these conditions.
Your bulbs may be soft - this is normal and not a problem. Bulbs are firm when dormant and usually soft when in leaf. This is because the nutrients which are stored in them are being used by the plant. The nutrients are stored in the bulb as the foliage dies back later.
In-the-green bulbs and/or rhizomes must be unpacked immediately and planted (in the ground or containers) as soon as possible. If the roots are dry, this is not a problem. Submerge the bulbs in a bowl of water for 10 minutes before continuing.
If you cannot plant them straight away, take them out of the bag and put them in a cool, dark place (for example a shed) and cover in damp compost or newspaper, but do not leave them for more than 48 hours.
We recommend watering after planting even if rain is expected. Watering helps to settle the soil around the roots and facilitates faster establishment. It also helps to rehydrate and stimulate the plants after transportation.
WE RECOMMEND WEARING GLOVES WHEN HANDLING ALL BULBS AND PLANTS
Planting depths given are a guide only and it is not too important, provided the bulbs are protected by a good layer of soil. Ensure that any green parts of the shoots (not white) are above ground. Press the soil down firmly and water if planting into a dry area. Keep an eye on the site after planting and watch out for any signs of rodent/squirrel disturbance.
In-the-green bulbs may flower lightly in the first year, but may not. They will spend their time establishing their roots and putting energy into the bulb/rhizome ready for next year.
Anemone
Anemone rhizomes should be planted approx. 5cm deep (or 2cm deep if in small pots) in light or partial shade. Under deciduous trees or shrubs is ideal. The rhizomes should be laid flat (horizontal). You can plant them as close, or as far apart as you like. Please note - it does NOT matter if the rhizomes break in transit, or if any shoots break. Even very small pieces will grow and if you have a broken rhizome, you have a free plant! You may see very little growth above soil level in the first year.
Bluebells
Bluebells prefer to be planted under deciduous trees or shrubs. Plant the bulbs approx. 10cm deep (shoot up). You can plant them as close, or as far apart as you like. POISONOUS IF INGESTED - WEAR GLOVES
Snowdrops (giant, single and double varieties)
Snowdrops are happy in full sun or light shade. Plant 5cm deep (shoot up). You can plant them as close, or as far apart as you like.
Wild Garlic
Plant wild garlic 8cm deep in partial or full shade. Under deciduous trees or shrubs is ideal. You can plant them as close, or as far apart as you like.
Winter Aconites
Plant in partial shade (under trees is fine), 5cm deep. You can plant them as close, or as far apart as you like. POISONOUS IF INGESTED - WEAR GLOVES
