Following bright yellow flowers in early summer, the blue-tinged seeds make an attractive display, held on tall stems above the foliage.
The leaves of the woad plant were used to produce a blue dye that the ancient Britons used as body paint when going into battle. Woad is also apparently an antiseptic and it is likely that it was used on wounds at the time. The seeds make a nice olive coloured dye.
The seedheads can be stored for many months and make stunning additions to arrangements.
