Astrantias have flower heads resembling a domed pincushion, set in a star of spiky bracts. They thrive in moist shady spots and flower from June to August.
Astrantia major is naturalised all over Europe and has been grown in Britain since 1596. The flowers are in shades of pink, green and white.

Excellent for drying and cutting.
Cut the foliage back hard after flowering and you may well be rewarded with late summer blooms.
