Used as a flavouring and to make German and Russian Licorice. Pale blue pea-like flowers. This herb grows in a similar way to many in the pea family, sprawling and climbing through other plants. The roots, which are edible, are also nitrogen fixing, so make a good soil improver.
Glycyrrhiza echinata was one of the species described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1753 work Species Plantarum, which was the starting point for botanical nomenclature. The echinata part of the name refers to hedgehog, from echinus, meaning 'prickly'.
This hardy herb is native to Southeastern Europe, parts of West Asia and East Asia.
Height and spread: 1m x 50cm
Common name: Hedgehog Licorice; German Licorice; Russian Licorice; Chinese Licorice
