Tall spikes of mid blue flowers with white, bee-like centres are carried above a clump of delicately fingered, mid-green foliage. Delphiniums enjoy a rich soil and are best staked against wind damage.
Delphiniums have been grown in Britain for several centuries, but the tall border varieties first became popular in the 19th century. The plant takes its name from the Greek word for a dolphin, because the flowers are said to resemble a dolphins head.
