Native to Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, and into northeast Greece. Hardy in the UK but requires a well drained soil as it does not like to overwinter in soggy soil.

Iris: Named after the goddess of the rainbow, probably because of the variety of brilliant flower colours. Irises were traditionally a symbol of power and much used in heraldry, being the symbol of the kings of France. They had a variety of medicinal uses, and iris root was important in perfumery. Irises grow in a variety of habitats, some in baking hot sun and others in water.
Common name: Rock Iris; German Iris; Dwarf Bearded Iris
