Geranium nodosum (Knotted Cranesbill)

A lovely Hardy Geranium which is equally happy in sun or shade. Small lilac-pink flowers are produced continuously from May to September above a mound of pretty glossy, deeply divided, mid-green leaves.

This woodland plant makes excellent ground cover for a shady spot but is happy in sun too. It requires very little attention once established and is happy in any soil, from dry to wet.

Myth and Legend

Apparently, the Prophet Mohammed, whilst resting beside a stream, decided to wash his shirt in the water. Having done so, he spread his shirt out to dry on a bed of mallows that grew close by and then lay down and slept. As he slept, a miraculous transformation occurred. First the mallows blushed with pleasure at having the opportunity to serve the great man. Then, by the time he awoke, the mallows had all been transformed into cranesbills.

Traditionally, cranesbills offer protection against snakes and serpents. Hence the following country rhyme:

Snakes will not go

Where geraniums grow.

Dreaming of geraniums is meant to be a sign that you need not worry about a recent quarrel, as it meant nothing and will soon be forgotten.

All our plants are supplied in 9cm pots unless otherwise specified. Plants in this size pot establish quickly in the garden and often outpace plants in bigger pots planted at the same time. Our potted plants can be planted immediately, unless otherwise noted, or you can leave them in their pots until you are ready to plant.
The majority of our plants are grown outdoors. This means that they follow their natural growth patterns and are ready to plant at any time of the year. If you order the plants in winter, they are likely to be dormant and died back to ground level, ready to shoot again in spring - just like the herbaceous perennials in your own garden. Very occasionally, in winter and early spring, we may indicate on the packing slip that a plant needs to be hardened off before planting out. We grow most of what we sell ourselves, in our nursery in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Our prices include VAT at 20%.
