This hardy perennial was brought from eastern USA in 1732 and was originally named Cimicifuga because it was believed that it could repel bugs and flees (Cimex = Bug, Fugo = Flee). In the States it was traditionally used to cure Rattlesnake bites, hence some of its other common names.
In the garden it is a magnificent border plant. Large, upright plants with beautiful dark brown-purple stems and foliage, and dense spikes of, fragrant white flowers from August through to the end of autumn, often tinted purple in bud.
It will grow in full sun but is happiest in partial or full shade. Will grow in most soils, including quite wet.
Height and Spread: 1.5m x 75cm
Common names: Bugbane; Black Snakeroot; Rattleroot; Black Cohosh; Squawroot.
Synonyms: Cimicifuga racemosa 'Purpurea'; Cimicifuga simplex var. simplex Atropurpurea Group
