An old cottage garden plant with green foliage and pure white, pendant flowers underneath the many stems, in May and June. Blue-black berries follow. A wonderful addition to a shady spot in the garden.
Common names: Solomon's Seal, David's Harp, Lady's Seal, Job's Tears, My Lady's Lockets, Ladder To Heaven.
The name Solomon's Seal has an uncertain derivation but goes back to the Middle Ages at least. Other names come from the habit of the flower stalks (which arch like a harp) and the drooping pearl- like flowers (which could be taken for tears). The genus name Polygonatum is Latin for "many knees" and is named for the knobby rootstock.
Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Polygonatum prefer rich soil and part shade but they are also very tolerant of other conditions and will grow in most situations. May die back in summer after flowering but will shoot again the following spring.
Native of Asia and Europe, including Britain.
Height: 60cm
Note: Can cause nausea if eaten.
