A bright green, leafy perennial, fully hardy in the UK and evergreen in mild areas. Will grow to about 3-4ft tall and across. Huge spires of two-tone hooded flowers rise above spiky glossy green foliage from July to September.
A tough and easy plant to grow. Acanthus will grow in sun or shade. This acanthus is a vigorous perennial that has a striking architectural presence - and the flowers can be used in both fresh and dried arrangements. The leaves were the source of the Corinthian leaf motif, developed and used as a decoration in ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture.
Introduced to the UK from Southern Europe in 1629.
Tolerant of drought and shade.
Height: 1.2m
Common names: Bear's breeches.
